Ron Ask, DDS; Jackson Creek Dental Group (SDDS Member)
Dr. Ron Ask is a graduate of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in 1977. He received the Omicron Kappa Epsilon award for being in the top 10% of his class scholastically. Also in dental school, he received the outstanding achievement award from the American Academy of Periodontology.

Dr. Ask is passionate in the constant pursuit of excellence in his dentistry. He feels strongly about providing comprehensive and advanced dentistry for his patients. “In the pursuit of becoming a world class dentist, Ron Ask’s mission in life is to build organizations to build people.”

He has enjoyed providing desperately needed dentistry in out-of-the way places like Nicaragua, Mexico, the Marshall Islands, Costa Rica, Peru, Armenia twice, and Egypt most recently. He also enjoys going to dental continuing education classes, gardening and traveling. Locally, Dr. Ask has led JCDG to provide free services around Valentine’s day to needful children for the last 35 years. Now, JCDG coordinates this day with the national and SDDS “Smiles for Kids Day.” To date, JCDG has donated approximately $500,000 worth of services on this day, not including what is done daily for the needy over the last 41 years.

Dr. Ask is honored to be the husband of 43 years to his lovely wife, Jeanine, and proud father to Jerhet, a recent partner at JCDG, and Lawryn, who will hopefully become the latest JCDG partner shortly.

Leon A. Assael, DMD, CMM, FACD, FICD; California Northstate University School of Dental Medicine
Dr. Leon Assael DMD was the Founding Dean of California Northstate College of Dental Medicine. He is Adjunct Associate Professor in Public Health, and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery at University of California San Francisco. He is the immediate past Chair of the Board of the American Dental Education Association. He is Dean Emeritus of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and holds an BA from Columbia University and earned a DMD from Harvard University School of Dental Medicine, as well as a Certificate in Medical Management from the University of Kentucky. He completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Assael was in medical school/hospital-based practice until entering dental education at the University of Connecticut in 1989. He has served as residency program director in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the University of Connecticut and Oregon Health & Sciences University. Dr. Assael served as Dean at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry until 2003, when he was appointed program director then chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Medical Director of hospital dentistry at the Oregon Health & Science University.

He is the past editor-in-chief of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (2001-2011, current co-editor in chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, past chairman of the Council on Dental Education and Licensure of the American Dental Association, and a diplomate to the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Assael is the past chair of the Council of Deans of the American Dental Education Association. In 2001, President George W. Bush awarded Dr. Assael the America’s Promise Award for advancements in oral health in Appalachia achieved by the University of Kentucky faculty. He is the recipient of the Donald Osborn award for outstanding educator in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. In 2010, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons awarded Dr. Assael the Board of Trustees special recognition award. Dr. Assael has clinical and research interests in value-based health care, systems based oral health education, dental therapy, bone diseases and nerve injury.

Dr. Carpenter graduated from Tulane Medical School and completed his residency in Preventive Medicine. In addition to his traditional medical training, he has pursued extensive studies in integrative and mind-body medicine from well-known leaders in the field of complementary medicine, including Dr. Herbert Benson at Harvard Medical School and Dr. Andrew Weil at the University of Arizona. He received his Board Certification from the American Board of Holistic Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

Celena Donahue, Health Systems Manager; American Cancer Society
Ms. Donahue is the Health Systems Manager, Primary Care & State Based Systems for the American Cancer Society; West Region. She graduated from California State University, Sacramento in 2008. Her current positions include high-level engagement with Federally Qualified Community Health Centers, Primary Care Associations, Indian Health Services, Tribal Primary care systems, Community Health Workers, Health Plans, State agencies, community-based organizations and regional/local networks. As a veteran registered dental assistant, LaDonna Drury-Klein brings life, energy and inspiration to all her work both in the classroom and in the conference room. Jaime has worked in the fields of domestic violence and sexual assault for 20 years and medical social work and hospice for 10 years. Her passion is providing domestic violence and sexual violence prevention education for all ages and ensuring survivor-centered, trauma-informed services. Marcella Oster, RDA
Marcella Oster is a current RDA with 37 years’ experience in many areas of the dental field. In 1995 she co-founded and was president of the first female owned hazardous waste treatment facility called EcoSolutions. In 1999 it was acquired by the largest transport and treatment facility of hazardous and bio waste. Marcella is an independent speaker for CDA and co-created one of the first dental hazardous waste training videos offering continuing education and approved by the Dental Board of California. She is a current CE provider and lectures all over California. She donates her extra time at a free dental clinic in Auburn and enjoys assisting at CDAcares.

Paul Raskin, DDS (SDDS Member)
Dr. Raskin graduated from the University of Detroit School of Dentistry in 1964. He passed the California State Boards in 1965 while serving a Rotating Dental Internship at Martinez VA Hospital, Martinez, CA.

Concurrently with private practice in Berkeley, CA and later in Sacramento, CA, he served eight years in the U.S. Army Reserves Dental Corps, being honorably discharged in July, 1977 with the rank of Major. As a private practitioner, he spent several years on the part time Prosthodontic Staff at Highland General Hospital, Oakland, CA. In 1976 he was promoted to Commanding Officer, 6253 General Hospital Sacramento Unit. In 1975 he was appointed Director of the Department of Dentistry at UC Davis School of Medicine with the academic rank of Assistant Clinical Professor, a position he held until returning to private practice in 1977.

With a consuming interest in removable prosthodontics, Dr. Raskin maintains a research laboratory that has brought forth several patents covering important discoveries in the fitting and fabrication of removable prosthodontic appliances.

Over many years, Raskin has studied with Bernie Levin, Earl Pound, Robert Brigante, John Frush, and others. Notable among his mentors was Dr. Gino Passamonti who, in 1964, first suggested we could make our own denture teeth, a concept that has been the basis of Dr. Raskin’s practice, limited to removable prosthodontics, since 1981.

Alex Ray, PT, DPT; North Area Physical Therapy and Aquatic Therapy
Alex Ray graduated with a Bachelor of Science from UC Davis in 2004 with a major in Exercise Science. He then went on to graduate from the University of the Pacific with a Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2007. He has been a practicing physical therapist at North Area PT for 12 years, and took over ownership of clinic in 2012.

Initially Alex’s continuing education focused on athletes and he was certified as a strength and conditioning specialist. As he worked in private outpatient PT, he became more interested in the weekend warrior and the aging population that was motivated to stay active. Jamison Spencer, DMD, MS
Dr. Jamison Spencer is the director of Dental Sleep Medicine for the Center for Sleep Apnea and TMJ, in Boise Idaho and Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Spencer has personally treated thousands of patients with sleep apnea and TMJ problems, and now focuses on helping dentists help their patients with such problems.
