The rising cost of healthcare and the growing concern for preventable harm in the hospital has prompted increased scrutiny on the rate of hospital-acquired infections. For the last decade, hospitals have focused heavily on the prevention of device-associated infections such as ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). This presentation will focus on the significance and prevention of non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP). NV-HAP is not related to a device and is an understudied, unmonitored and under-recognized preventable hospital-acquired infection. New studies have found NV-HAP is an emerging factor in prolonged hospital stays and patient morbidity. The journey of one local hospital to prevent NV-HAP with improved oral care will be shared. In addition, the role of the dental professional and opportunities in the medical/dental partnership for the prevention of NV-HAP will be discussed.

Course Topics:

  • Be able to discuss the significance of non-ventilator hospital acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP) in the acute care setting
  • Be able to identify the most modifiable risk factors for NV-HAP
  • Be able to recognize medical/dental partnership opportunities for the prevention of NV-HAP
