Early detection and treatment of oral precancers is associated with better prognosis, and improved well-being of patients. This course provides a general overview of oral potentially malignant disorders and the importance of early detection of oral cancer. Participants will learn how to recognize oral leukoplakia, become familiar with the treatment options for oral potentially malignant disorders and understand how to formulate a proper treatment plan for their patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the current definitions of oral potentially malignant disorders
  • Become familiar with the current treatment options for patients affected by oral leukoplakia
  • Recognize the important role that dentists play in early detection of oral cancer

Alessandro Villa, DDS, PhD, MPH:

Dr. Villa is the President of Oral Medicine Associates, PA and Chief of Oral Medicine, Oral Oncology and Dentistry at the Miami Cancer Institute. Dr. Villa specializes in treating oral mucosal and salivary gland diseases, oral precancers and oral complications from cancer treatment. He also serves as a Professor at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, Florida International University. Prior to joining the Miami Cancer Institute in 2022, Dr. Villa was an Associate Clinical Professor of oral medicine and head and neck surgery at University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He also directed the oral medicine residency programs and oral oncology fellowships at UCSF and Harvard. Dr. Villa’s research focuses on oral dysplasia, and oral complications from cancer therapy. He works closely with several organizations to reduce the burden of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) related cancers. Dr. Villa has authored more that 100 peer reviewed articles published in medical and dental journals and several book chapters.
