This course highlights three emerging models for delivering dental care outside of the traditional dental practice. These practice models have the potential to expand the dentist’s reach to patients unlikely to walk through the office front door, without abandoning the day-to-day functions of the traditional practice model. As the healthcare delivery system responds to the pressure to turn coverage into access, and dentists seek ways to engage in new and innovative ways to provide dental care, understanding these models can lead to new opportunities.
- The rationale and advantages of contracting with a Federally Qualified Health Center to provide dental care to clinic patients
- How the Virtual Dental Home works and each dental team member’s role
- The practice model of the Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice and the dentist’s role in collaborative practice
Presented by: Gayle Mathe, Director of Community Programs for the California Dental Association
Gayle Mathe, Director of Community Programs for the California Dental Association, practiced as a registered dental hygienist for nearly 30 years before joining CDA in 2003 as a policy analyst and legislative advocate.
From the inception of her tenure with CDA, Gayle has been engaged in the association’s policy development process, serving as the manager and then director of policy development from 2007 through 2013. In that role, along with member volunteers and staff, Gayle was responsible to assess the numerous and complex policy issues that affect, or have the potential to affect, the practice of dentistry, and assist members to develop policy guidance for the association. Over these years, Gayle has been involved with several key policy issues, including a state kindergarten dental check-up requirement, dental professionals as emergency responders, perinatal and infant oral health guidelines, school-based dental disease prevention programs, dental Medicaid program reform, and research into strategic approaches to reducing barriers to dental care in California, the financing of dental care, the benefits marketplace, and more.
Gayle Mathe holds an Associate of Arts in Dental Hygiene and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. Prior to joining CDA, she was involved in a variety of community advocacy projects, including founding a preschool in the Los Feliz area of Southern California, managing a successful school bond campaign in the City of Folsom, and tobacco advocacy that created a smoke-free environment at the California State Fair and the Folsom Rodeo.
