Jessica Hawthorne, California Employers Association:
As our Senior HR Director, Jessica manages CEA’s team of HR Directors and Advisors. Jessica has conducted hundreds of investigations over the years, including sexual harassment investigations. She understands the complexities of He Said/She Said situations and is an expert at helping to determine credibility during the investigation process. She is always an engaging and dynamic speaker, including many real life examples in her training programs.
Jessica joined CEA in 2016 after serving as Sr. Employment Law Counsel and manager of the Labor Law Helpline at the California Chamber of Commerce. She used her employment law knowledge and expertise to produce and conduct webinars and seminars, as well as contribute to CalChamber publications.
Jessica previously acted as California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA) Internal Counsel and as an associate with Young, Minney, and Corr, a law firm specializing in labor and employment and charter school law. Jessica Hawthorne is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh (B.A.) and Widener University School of Law (J.D.).
Gail Whaley, California Employers Association:
Gail Whaley’s knowledge and insight enhances our already strong team of HR Advisors. Prior to joining CEA, Gail served as the Senior Employment Law Counsel at the California Chamber of Commerce for seven years. She has used her employment law background and education to create countless human resources compliance products and materials such as HR forms, policies, checklists, handbooks and guides. Gail uses her legal experience to monitor legislative and litigation developments and provide up-to-date information to CEA membership through HR blogs, newsletters and other publications. She makes the most complex laws easy to understand and includes practical ways for employers to implement new policies and procedures.
Early in her career, Gail specialized in labor and employment law, and has nearly 20 years experience working in California law firms such as Hanson Bridgett, LLP and Nossaman, LLP. Her extensive background in legal compliance and workplace investigations makes her a well-rounded advisor.
A great litigator, author, educator and executive coach, Gail works with CEA members’ everyday on employee relation issues. She enjoys working on site with employers, and often their employees, to provide solutions and conflict resolution. Gail is a California native who attended U.C. Berkeley (B.A., Political Science) and USC Gould School of Law (J.D.).
