Smiles for Kids

Description: Our largest and most far-reaching project, Smiles for Kids® (SFK) was adopted and expanded by the Foundation in 2003; it partners member dentists with local schools to screen and provide dental education to thousands of children each year. From the screenings, nearly 1000 underserved children are treated by member dentists and their staffs on SFK Day each February. More than half of those children are then “adopted” for further pro bono treatment – including specialty and orthodontic treatment. Each year, a million dollars in pro bono treatment is provided to children in the five county SDDS area.
Patient Base: Uninsured children within our five-county area in need of urgent dental care
Services provided: Free dental care
Volunteers Needed: Doctors to “adopt” patients seen on Smiles for Kids Day for follow-up care. We also need screening doctors, doctors to “host” an SFK site at
their office on SFK day, doctors and staff to work on SFK day, doctors to “adopt” patients for follow-up care after SFK day.

Smiles for Big Kids

Description: Patterned after SFK, Smiles for BIG Kids® (SFBK) began in 2009 and, recognizing that often the parents’ dental health needs are equally as urgent as their children’s, SFBK focused on the needs of parents of SFK patients and the elderly. Since then, the program has expanded to address the dental needs of underserved adults (including parents of SFK patients). The Foundation has partnered with several local community organizations to identify eligible patients and, each year, member dentists provide much needed care to these individuals in the form of dentures, restorative treatment and specialty treatment.
Patient Base: Uninsured adults within our five-county area in need of urgent dental care
Services provided: Free dental care
Volunteers Needed: Dentists willing to “adopt” patients for immediate/emergency needs in their office.

CDA Cares, San Bernardino

September 27-28, 2019

Description: An estimated 10 million Californians experience barriers to dental care. The California Dental Association Foundation and CDA host CDA Cares, a program that allows volunteer dentists, with the assistance of other dental professionals and community volunteers, to provide dental services at no charge to more than 2,000 patients at each event. Through CDA Cares, efforts to educate the public and policymakers about the importance of good oral health and the need for an adequately funded dental safety net are having an impact. Adult Denti-Cal benefits eliminated by the state in 2009 were partially restored in 2014, however, the program remains chronically underfunded and leaves many, including the working poor, without access to care.
Volunteers Needed: Dental and health professionals including general dentists, oral surgeons, dental hygienists, assistants, lab technicians, nurses and pharmacists
