FROM THE DENTAL HEALTH COMMITTEE... By Dr. Chester Hsu

Early childhood caries is an infectious disease that can begin when a child’s teeth first arrive, usually around six months of age. Without early intervention, this disease can lead to the need for extensive dental repair, typically before age two. In these cases, costly general anesthesia at the hospital is often required. Thus, every child should have a dental home by age one so that those at risk can be identified, and preventive interventions can begin before invasive dental treatment becomes necessary.

SOME DISTURBING FACTS ABOUT EARLY CHILDHOOD CARIES:

  • Dental caries is the most common chronic disease of children throughout the world. It is five times more prevalent than childhood asthma, and four times more common than childhood obesity.
  • Pain and suffering from ECC can lead to problems with eating, speaking and learning.
  • Dental disease can lead to potentially grave systemic problems, and increased number of hospitalizations and emergency room visits.
  • Can lead to extensive and costly dental treatment, usually under general anesthesia.
  • In California, an estimated half a million children miss school each year due to dental problems.
  • Over 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental related problems in the US.
  • The rate of dental caries in children aged two to five is on the rise in the last decade.

To our medical colleagues who share the same passion for the health and well-being of all children:
Please help us prevent and fight ECC by referring infants to the dentist and establishing a dental home by age one, or as early as possible.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), children should have their first visit to the dentist when they are age 1. As a dentist, do you know how to perform this exam?
